Valve Responds to Boycott
Gabe Newell (Manager at Valve) officially responds to the Boycott's 40,000+ members for the first time, addressing the concerns of exclusive Left 4 Dead 1 support. See the video below for more information on the game's boycott.

"Doing a sequel in one year is new for Valve, but providing ongoing support for our titles after the initial launch... has been part of our philosophy since Half-Life was released ten and half years ago. We see no reason to change that and will continue to support the over three million customers in the L4D community. Some in the community are concerned that the announcement of L4D2 implied a change in our plans for L4D1. We aren't changing our plans for L4D1."
- Gabe Newell

Boyctott Leaders Invited to Valve Headquarters
"As for L4D2, things seemed balanced and 'tight' and did not feel like a rushed job. What we can say with confidence is that the quality of gameplay in Left 4 Dead 2 is not in question, and it will only get better."
-Walking_Target
"Left 4 Dead 2 carries Left 4 Dead gameplay which we all love, and our long-requested bug fixes/content. It's exciting stuff..."
-Agent of Chaos

“It’s hard to express plans and designs that aren’t done to the point where you can show them yet. Even at E3, we had all this stuff, but we knew all these things that were going to be changed from what we were showing there. A good example is Rochelle. She’s drastically changed in her look from E3 to release. There are always refinements we always do, and we always knew we were going to have all this. But you’ve got to show the game at some point, and that’s what we did. We knew when we were first showing it that it was good and that we would be at this place now and be happy.”
- Chet Faliszek (Left 4 Dead Manager)

29 September - 3 October 2009:
Canada X’09 – Microsoft’s Xbox Holiday Preview Event
Xbox Canada hosted media & community in downtown Toronto for a sneak peek at the biggest games of the year, including Left 4 Dead 2. One notable difference in this build are weapon reload timers, as the limited footage does showcase the Silenced SMG with a much faster reload animation.

The build presented here is much closer in resemblance to the final product. Survivors, Infected, animations, textures, sounds, and scripts seem to all be complete for the retail release by this point, which can be argued to be the biggest jump in content between builds. Another key feature is the brand new inclusion of the "Riot Cop" Uncommon Infected.

8 October 2009:
Announcement - Valve Reveals New Scavenge Gamemode
Scavenge, the fourth game mode to be included in its upcoming zombie thriller, was announced to the public. 12 October 2009:
Leak - Dead Center and Hard Rain Campaigns
The two remaining Left 4 Dead 2 campaigns received multiple reports of being leaked. The two campaign posters of Dead Center and Hard Rain were cycled across the internet, providing context of what to expect on the final release.

IGN Review stated "Taiwanese website GNN.Gamer posted movie posters of what looks like the final two, and still unannounced, Left 4 Dead 2 campaigns, titled Hard Rain and Dead Center. These new posters could still be masterful photoshop jobs, so we're going to keep this labeled as a rumor for now". IGN also reached out to Valve for a complete confirmation on the campaigns' legitimacy.
While the poster leaks were (obviously) correct, there were many individuals that refused to believe any potential leak information, however, much like IGN, many commended the poster art works. Another online article explains "Of course this could all still be a rumor, as Valve has yet to confirm the leak. But if this is a fan made hoax, they did a damn good job on the iconic episode posters."

15 October 2009:
Announcement - Left 4 Dead 2 Early Demo
Valve explains the details of the newly announced Left 4 Dead 2 demo. "The Left 4 Dead 2 demo will feature gameplay taken from The Parish campaign, set in the New Orleans French Quarter. Playable by 1 to 4 players over local or Internet connections on both the Xbox 360 and PC (with two-player split screen available on the Xbox 360), the demo features all the new boss infected zombies and all the new melee weapons included in the full product". Despite what Valve mentions about "all weapons", the demo did not include weapons such as the Fireaxe or Grenade Launcher.
Valve also makes the announcement that "those who pre-order the game (at participating retailers or Steam) will obtain early access to the demo on October 27th. The demo will then be made available to Xbox LIVE Gold members and all PC gamers on November 3. Then all Xbox LIVE members will obtain access to the demo on November 10".

Also newly confirmed is that Left 4 Dead 2 will be among that diminutive list of Xbox 360 Avatar award-compatible games. By completing specific in-game tasks, Xbox 360 gamers will be able to acquire items, such as med kits, garden gnomes, and zombie T-shirts for their avatars.

21 October 2009:
Left 4 Dead 2 Demo Pre-release Build Exported
A Left 4 Dead 2 Pre-release build dated October 21st, 2009 was found through the game's first pressing PC DVD/ROM game disc. The build consists of no differences except for a list-based organized main menu, similarly resembling the menu interface used in Left 4 Dead 1 and the Left 4 Dead 2 E3 Demo. Another miscellaneous note is the build export number 4001.

- Version 1.0.1.0 (left4dead2)
- EXE build: 18:23:20 Oct 21 2009 (4001) (550)

Many thanks to gamer NC-HardcorE for donating this build to the Hidden Palace Videogame Prototype Archive. As of 2025, this is the earliest known Left 4 Dead 2 build that is currently accessible to the public. See the video for more information.

22 October 2009:
Leak - Left 4 Dead 2 Intro Movie
Left 4 Dead 2 Introduction Movie was leaked over the internet across multiple sources. As expected, the intro movie was widely appreciated and received nothing but positive feedback. Some fans, however, point out the action-oriented approach in opposition with the Introduction Movie in this game's predecessor, Left 4 Dead 1.

The last official cinematic was the E3 Trailer released in June.
23 October 2009:
Interview - Hard Rain Campaign Reveal
A GameSpot interview with Chet Faliczek was posted and officially revealed full detailed gameplay of the Hard Rain Campaign. This interview was published 10 days after the campaign's loading poster was leaked. It is believed that this interview acts as an official response to that event.

Another Interview with Gabe Newell was released around the same timeframe, featuring the multiple aspects of the same Hard Rain playtest footage

Both Interview features no key differences to the final release, however, give a lot of contextual history on development decisions, such as the Witches in the Sugar Mill. Also featured is more gameplay of the newly featured Scavenge Mode.
27 October 2009:
Left 4 Dead 2 Demo Live and More Pre-Order Content Revealed
Left 4 Dead 2 pre-order bonuses are live, including the Left 4 Dead 2 Multiplayer Demo for Xbox 360 and PC. Much like the demo featured at the E3 convention earlier this year, this demo included gameplay from the first two (of five) chapters from "The Parish" campaign. Valve mentions to "Keep an eye out for all-new guns, melee weapons, items, Special Infected and Uncommon Common, a new campaign-specific set of zombies with unique abilities." This free demo also allowed players to try the Parish campaign in online multiplayer, therefore increasing the community engagement.
The demo has most, if not all, assets of the final release included in its build. However, minor changes between the demo and retail release include a smaller text font, the "Upsell" Video, and an unfinished version of the Left 4 Dead 2 Intro movie. Fans who pre-ordered on the PC were able to utilize the game's console for cheat commands to play as the new special Infected prior to the game's release.
Also included in the Left 4 Dead 2 Pre-order bonuses are "Bill's Hat", a Teamfortress 2 cosmetic, and a GameStop "Exclusive In-Game Baseball Bat" for your Left 4 Dead 2 game.

The (wooden) baseball bat was advertised as an exclusive pre-order weapon, but evidently the weapon was eventually accessible to all players in subsequent updates, specifically, "The Passing" DLC. This DLC allowed this melee weapon to almost guarantee a spawn on all maps, and sometimes more than once. See this online forum here for more information.

4 November 2009:

The marketing campaign will include Monday Night Football and UFC television broadcasts, roadside billboards, popular lifestyle and gaming sites, and online and print advertising.

Fans will compete in the "Dude! Where's My Thumb Contest 2" for chance at winning a Xbox 360-hand-painted, laser engraved and custom designed to celebrate the release of Left 4 Dead 2.
"Based on the strength of pre-orders, Left 4 Dead 2 will be the fastest-selling product in Valve's history. Left 4 Dead 2 has consistently run at 300% of Left 4 Dead's numbers."
- Gabe Newell
"We'll be supporting Left 4 Dead 2's launch with a $25 million campaign. Valve's vice-president of Marketing. "Left 4 Dead 2 has already set the record for greatest number of pre-orders in our company's history, and we're still over a month out from shipping."
- Doug Lombardi

The DLC include a new campaign along with a new firearm, a new melee weapon, a new uncommon infected, new survival areas, 10 new achievements and the new "Mutation" game mode. Pretty good deal!

- Doug Lombardi

Canada X'10 - Left 4 Dead 2 Passing DLC Preview Demo
A new Left 4 Dead 2 Passing DLC demo was published and revealed for testing at the Canadian X'10 gaming convention. Based on footage, it seems that only level 2, was accessible at this time, therefore, the original survivors were not present during this demo, and could be due to them being unfinished or Valve not wanting to reveal them at this time.
This build has no major differences regarding gameplay, however, there are some minor map differences in contrast to the final export. One notable difference is the pistol suitcase located on the upstairs apartment room. This version shows the suitcase with no money in it. The final release developed a "money suitcase" to reference the Midnight Rider's song quote "Pistols and Money".
Another key difference is the writing on the wall located in the bottom floor of the apartment building, which used to state "We have sown the seeds of sin. This is our pubishment". This was originally wall text placed in the Death Toll campagin. The final version writes "Repent. The End is extremely nigh".

Custom Mapping Assistance
Valve developer Phil Co writes the first official Left 4 Dead 2 Blog post that provides tips and insight on modding and custom mapping content. The post talks on the upcoming Passing DLC while also speaking on the newly created the Left 4 Dictionary, a dictionary that consists of a set of terms used to describe a space on a map.

While this isn't of great significance to the casual audience, it shows Valve making an effort to shine the light on content creators.

If you recognize the name Phil Co, then you may be reminded of an in-game name used in one of the earliest-known Left 4 Dead 2 builds, as he was one of the lead developers on the Left 4 Dead 2 project.

See the video to the right for a crash course (no pun intended) on the development and controversial history of the Cold Stream campaign. The Beta of Cold Stream was internal until it went public on July 6th, 2011 for PC users.
